CAF President Ahmad spoke to the press on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 via a virtual conference held following the CAF Executive Committee meeting. One of the hot topics was the creation of the all-new Women’s Champions League, the first edition of which is scheduled for 2021.
For President Ahmad Ahmad, it is necessary to reckon with a continental club competition to raise the level of women’s football in Africa.
Starting next year, the Champions League will be contested between women’s football clubs. About ten or even fifteen clubs can participate depending on the commitments and the format of the competition will be revealed in the process.
Note that the 2020 Women’s AFCON has been canceled and that the competition will return in 2022 to serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2023 Women’s World Cup co-organized by Australia and New Zealand.
