2018 African Men’s and Women’s Club Championship organized by the African Handball Confederation (CAHB) will be held from April 12 to 22 in Egypt. For this event, which will showcase the men’s and women’s draws, the main goal is to celebrate handball.
After Morocco last year, it is the turn of another Maghreb country in this case Egypt to play host to the 34th edition of the African Men’s and Women’s Club Championship. The event, which is scheduled for April 2018, has many challenges including the popularization of handball on the continental front. Indeed, despite its introduction into schools, the discipline still struggles to occupy a key place in Africa.
Let’s take the example of the women’s handball leagues ranking, the first African team is Angola, ranked 18th in the world. Next team is Tunisia, 26th and Ivory Coast ranks 28th. That means there is still a lot of work before narrowing the gaps between European and African selections.
Regarding the African Championship Club, Primeira de Agosto of Angola, the defending champion in the women’s table and winner of the last three editions of 2015, 2016 and 2017 clearly shows the supremacy of Angola at a continental level. In addition, the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions were all won by Petro Athletico Luanda, the other strong team of the country of Palancas Negras (Black Antelopes). The other African federations should perhaps take inspiration from the Angolan model to have better results.
It should also be noted that the multiplicity of handball competitions in Africa can help to balance and define this discipline as major for both men and women. The mediatization of competitions is an opportunity to take this sport off the beaten track by presenting its rules and values to the younger generation. For African teams, taking part in many world events is a way to gain more experience. Moreover, for this year the program will be intense for both Senior Women and Junior.
