Following a FIFA inspection visit to Costa Rica and Panama and a number of discussions with the two member associations, the Bureau of the FIFA Council confirmed that the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup FIFA 2020 would take place in August, in Costa Rica and Panama.
The 16 participating teams will be divided into four groups of four. The first two of each group will be directly qualified for the quarter-finals. This is the first time that a FIFA youth competition has been organized jointly by two countries. This event happened once in the history of the FIFA World Cup ™, during Korea / Japan 2002.
The number of stadiums used for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Costa Rica and Panama 2020 will be defined in consultation with the two member associations. The match calendar and tournament dates will be specified later.
“We would like to thank the federations of Costa Rica and Panama for their commitment to serving women’s football in general and the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in particular. We expect a fantastic competition in August,” said Colin Smith, Director of FIFA Tournaments and Events.
“The FIFA Women’s World Cup in France was a resounding success, which must now reflect on the other categories. The U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica and Panama next year will be a great opportunity for us to consolidate the popularity of the discipline. In addition, this first tournament organized by two countries will allow us to maximize our impact, “rejoices Sarai Bareman, director of the FIFA Women’s Football division.
